course overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to respond to and suppress an urban fire where offensive and defensive strategies are used. It involves proceeding to a fire, preparing extinguishing media and/or equipment for use, entering a structure, conducting search and rescues, and combatting fires.

The course applies to those who work as a member of a team, under direct supervision. Work at this level is undertaken under direct supervision, and with instruction.

• Fire behaviour and spread
• Causes, characteristics, hazards, and responses to types of fire
• Site gases and characteristics
• Critical situation dynamics and control
• Search and rescue procedures
• Firefighting strategies and techniques
• Structural entry techniques
• Appliance and equipment selection, use and maintenance
• Avoiding fire recurrence
• Salvage and overhaul
• Casualty treatment
• Identification of hazardous materials
• Natural and mechanical ventilation techniques
• Decision making and troubleshooting techniques
• Post incident record keeping and debriefing

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must:
• Hold and provide a current Statement of Attainment for RIIERR201E Conduct Fire Team Operations or equivalent and PUAFIR309 Operate Pumps or equivalent
• Provide photo I.D on entry
• Unless exempt, provide a verifiable USI number
• Be physically fit and healthy with capacity to perform manual tasks
• Be able to read, write, communicate orally, and understand and interpret complex information and situations
• Interact with others and work under pressure
• Dress appropriately i.e., long sleeve, long pants or overalls, safety boots/closed in shoes, safety glasses

If you are unsure if you require learning support, SDS can provide access to a LLN assessment that identifies if any learning support is needed. Please ensure you inform the training team on registration, if you fail to inform the training team at registration, learning support may not be available on the day of training.

This course is delivered over three (3) days and consists of classroom-based theory learning with practical based activities.

The pre-requisites for PUAFIR203 Respond to urban fire include:
• PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit (fire sector specific)

The pre-requisites for PUAFIR302 Suppress urban fire include:
• HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
• PUAFIR203 Respond to urban fire

skills maintenance

To ensure your skills and knowledge are maintained it is critical you undertake regular skills maintenance training. Where there is no licence or legislated expiry the industry standard for skills maintenance is every two (2) years.
