Overview
When an emergency occurs, clear leadership and coordinated action are critical.
This nationally recognised course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to lead an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) before, during, and after an emergency incident. The focus is on leadership, communication, decision-making, and coordination to ensure the safe evacuation of occupants and effective management of workplace emergencies.
Participants learn how to direct wardens and occupants, liaise with emergency services, and manage emergency procedures in accordance with workplace emergency plans and Australian Standards.
This course is suitable for personnel appointed as:
Chief Wardens
Deputy Chief Wardens
Emergency Coordinators
Supervisors and safety personnel responsible for emergency preparedness
A well-structured emergency plan relies on strong leadership to be effective. Without clear direction, confusion and delays can place people at risk.
This course develops the confidence and capability to lead calmly, communicate clearly, and coordinate effectively during high-pressure emergency situations.
Learning outcomes
The course covers the following:
- Prepare for workplace emergencies
- Apply command, control and coordinate aspects of workplace emergency procedures
- Control the response to emergency reports, signals and warning
- Coordinate reports and results of initial emergency response
- Debrief incident and report as per regulatory and workplace requirements
Entry Requirements
Participants must:
- Provide photo I.D on entry
- Unless exempt, provide a verifiable USI number
- Be physically fit and healthy with capacity to perform manual tasks
- Be able to read, write, communicate orally, and understand and interpret complex information and situations
- Be able to interact with others and work under pressure
- Dress appropriately i.e., long sleeve, long pants or overalls, safety boots/closed in shoes, safety glasses

SDS is committed to identifying and supporting the language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) needs of all learners. Where required, SDS may conduct an LLND assessment prior to training to determine whether any additional support or reasonable adjustment is needed.
Participants are encouraged to advise the training team at any time if they believe they may require learning support so appropriate arrangements can be made.
Delivery method
This course is delivered over half a day and consists of classroom-based theory learning with practical based activities.
Assessments
Assessment includes written and/or multiple-choice knowledge assessment and practical based skills assessments.
Completion
On successful completion of all assessment requirements participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for:
- PUAFER006 Lead an emergency control organisation
Skills maintenance
To ensure your skills and knowledge are maintained it is critical you undertake regular skills maintenance training. Where there is no licence or legislated expiry the industry standard for skills maintenance is every two (2) years.
