Overview
This non-accredited course will enhance your pre-hospital health care skills. Designed for healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and anyone involved in pre-hospital care who have successfully completed the Certificate IV in Health Care or higher health care qualification.
Learning outcomes
This course covers the following clinical skills:
Patient Assessment:
- Secondary survey
- Vital signs assessment
- Using a 3 lead ECG
- Taking a 12 lead ECG
- Patient handover and documentation
Advanced Resuscitation:
- Airway management
- Use of suction devices
- Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways
- iGel airway
- Use of bag valve mask with oxygen
- Seamless changeover
- Use of AED
- ROSC considerations
- CPR on the move
- Resuscitation scene management
Medication Administration in Medical conditions:
- Intramuscular injection
- Intranasal administration
- Nebulised medications
- Cardiac medications – GTN and Aspirin
- Pain medications – Fentanyl, Morphine, Methoxyflurane
- Diabetic medications -Glucagon, Glucose
- Seizure medications – Midazolam
- Anaphylaxis medications – EpiPen, IM Adrenaline
- Respiratory Medications – Salbutamol, Ipratropium Bromide
Extrication Techniques including Spinal Precautions:
- Scoop stretcher and head blocks
- Spinal board, spider harness and head blocks
- Kendrick Extrication Device
- Carry canvas
Trauma Skills:
- Haemorrhage control – Tourniquet and Wound packing
- Head injuries
- Spinal injuries
- Chest injuries
- Abdominal injuries
- Chest seals
- Pelvic binder
- Traction splint
- Fracture management and wound dressing
- Motor Bike Accidents
- Motor Vehicle Accidents
Entry Requirements
Participants must:
- Provide a copy of HLT41115 Certificate IV in Health Care and/or HLT41120 Certificate IV in Health Care or higher health care qualification
- Provide photo I.D on entry
- Perform uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on an infant manikin and adult manikin on the floor
- Unless exempt, provide a verifiable USI number
- Be physically fit and healthy with capacity to perform manual tasks
- Be able to read, write, communicate orally, and understand and interpret complex information and situations
- Interact with others and work under pressure
- Dress appropriately

SDS is committed to identifying and supporting the language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) needs of all learners. Where required, SDS may conduct an LLND assessment prior to training to determine whether any additional support or reasonable adjustment is needed.
Participants are encouraged to advise the training team at any time if they believe they may require learning support so appropriate arrangements can be made.
Delivery method
This course is delivered over three (3) days and consists of classroom-based theory learning with practical activities and assessment.
100% attendance is required.
Assessments
Assessment includes written and/or multiple-choice knowledge assessments and practical based skills assessments.
Completion
On completion of the course participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance in Pre-Hospital Health Care – Skills Maintenance.
In addition, and on successful completion of all in class learning and assessment, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for:
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

To ensure your skills and knowledge are maintained it is critical you undertake regular skills maintenance training.
