This hybrid delivery of PHTLS provides the flexibility to complete the theory component online at your own pace, followed by a one-day, face-to-face practical skills assessment at the SDS training centre.
Developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, PHTLS is recognised worldwide as the leading continuing education program for pre-hospital emergency trauma care. The program is evidence-based, scenario-driven, and focused on improving patient outcomes through critical thinking, rapid assessment, and effective intervention.
How the hybrid course works
Complete the online classroom/theory component in your own time
Attend a scheduled one-day on-site session for practical skills assessment and scenarios at SDS
This course is designed for healthcare and emergency response professionals, including:
Doctors, nurses, and paramedics
Rescue and emergency service personnel
Military medics and responders
Fire and police personnel where relevant to trauma management

Entry Requirements
Participants must:
- Have access to a computer with sound capability and an internet connection
- Provide completion certificate for the online portion through PSG.
- Provide photo I.D on entry
- Be physically fit and healthy with capacity to perform manual tasks
- Be able to read, write, communicate orally, and understand and interpret complex information and situations
- Interact with others and work under pressure
- Dress appropriately i.e., long sleeve, long pants or overalls, safety boots/closed in shoes, safety glasses

Delivery method
Self-Paced Online Theory Learning
- Approximately eight (8) hours of online learning.
- Participants will be provided with a link to register and purchase the PHTLS Hybrid materials through Jones & Bartlett Learning. Once participants complete the online portion, they must email the certificate and post-test grade evidence and bring both with them to the face-to-face classroom session at SDS.
- Participants are provided three attempts to successfully complete the online final exam. If a participant fails all three attempts, a new online course registration will be required, and a new access code will be provided to retake the online portion of the course resulting in additional charges.
Skills Assessment Day
- One (1) day, eight (8) hours consisting of skills stations and patient simulations.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- The course fee includes the online learning component and a copy of the PHTLS textbook (either e-book or hard copy depending on availability).
- To access the online pre-course learning, participants will be provided with a link to register and purchase the PHTLS Hybrid materials through Jones & Bartlett Learning. Please be advised that there is an additional charge of $46.15* payable directly to Jones & Bartlett for the purchase of this material. This amount is not included in the course fee.
- PHTLS course registrations close 10 standard business days prior to the course start date to allow time for the completion of the required 8-hours of online coursework.
- Please note that there is a non-refundable resource fee of $220.00* +GST for registration, which covers the textbook.

Assessments
PHTLS uses a combination of a written examination, an assessment of skills performance, and a capstone patient simulation to evaluate the level of understanding of the medical knowledge. Writ¬ten evaluations consist of a series of multiple-choice test questions that the students must answer.
Completion
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of completion valid for 4 years.
Skills maintenance
Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) training is required to be renewed every 4 years.
